Joint Mobilisation

This is the technique that a lot of physios and osteopaths use. The technique requires the practitioner to use their hand or a device to push consistently through a joint to allow the joint to move passively.

This means that the patient remains in a relaxed position while a specific joint is moved in a particular direction over and over again. Usually this will feel quite sore to the patient as the joint is not moving well because it is stiff and the muscles around it are tight.

Sometimes the mobilisation of a joint can cause headaches, but if the mobilisation of a joint in your neck is causing headaches then it is better to be mobilised so that your headaches have proper treatment. After mobilisation, your neck should feel free in moving well. This also applies to any other part of your body that receives mobilisation. Our Chiropractors are trained in the mobilisation of your neck, upper back, shoulders, elbows, wrists, fingers, hips, ankles and feet.

Not all Chiropractors use clicking and popping techniques for every joint in the body. Chiropractors often have to have other techniques that they use in order to reduce muscular tension for people and to get them the best result for their particular body type. For this reason we use many different techniques within the clinic to suit different people and mobilisation therapy is one of those.

If you are uncomfortable having a traditional manual thrust applied by a Chiropractors hands into a part of your body, then mobilisation may be an option for you. If you feel like you need more muscle and joint work together then mobilisation may be a good option for you as well.


Chiropractors train for years to know the appropriate exercises for people with different conditions.

Chiropractors are trained to know that if, for example, bending forward causes pain in a patient, that they should be doing exercises that keep them out of pain and keep them comfortable, while still being effective.

Exercises could include things like modifying your gym exercises, starting a swimming program, being told to try yoga or Pilates or even being told to rest instead of exercise.

Our Croydon Chiropractors have done extra training in rehabilitation strategies that work well with their Chiropractic treatment to get patients feeling better and reaching their goals.

There are 3 main groups of exercises our Chiropractors regularly give to their patients:

  1. Stability exercises: Pelvic stability exercises, Core strengthening exercises, deep neck flexor exercises, lower trapezius exercises for stability
  2. Mobility exercises: rotation exercises for your lower back or upper back. As well as mobilisation exercises for your feet, ankles, shoulders, wrists and elbows.
  3. Stretching exercises for your chest, the front of your hips and lower back
  4. Strengthening exercises: gluteal muscle strength and lower trapezius/ serratus anterior muscle strengthening exercises

These are the most effective for people who use suffer from pain or dysfunction. They also promote good posture, joint health and longevity.

Often what people need most is reassurance. They want to know that their problem can be helped and that they are not making it worse if they’re in pain.

People want to know what their problem is and what caused it in the first place, so that they can reduce pain in the short term and then work towards the long term resolution where the pain/ condition gone and is not coming back. By providing reassurance to patients by showing them that their issues cannot cause permanent damage and are reversible, people can rest assured that they are in the right place him with the right practitioner.


General stretching programs which give people added mobility and can help with recovery from physical exercise. Our Chiropractors at The Innate Connection have done extra training in which muscles to stretch that are associated with different pain syndromes.

For example, we will very rarely ask a patient to stretch their shoulder or upper trapezius because usually the problem has come from that muscle already being in a long (stretched out position) position, so it would not make sense to further stretch a muscle that is in a long position, therefore causing pain. Instead we can tell you about the muscles to stretch to improve your posture and to optimise your body and performance. Most stretches that we recommend are to be performed lightly, only for a short period of time and to be done consistently and regularly.

We find that by explaining why someone is performing a stretch exercise, how often to do it and why to do it, that often that people are more motivated to actually perform the exercise and therefore get better faster and don’t have to see us as often, which saves them time and money.

Activity Modification

If you wonder what kind of activities you should be doing to strengthen your back but not hurt it at the same time our Chiropractors can give that kind of advise and teach you how to modify your activities so that you don’t hurt yourself further. This kind of modification may come in the form of a letter to your employer to tell them that you need a stand up desk. Or it could be advise on sleeping position or how to sit while you’re at work so that you don’t add more strain to your neck, which is causing your neck pain. Activity modification is extremely important if you want to relieve your condition and then stay out of pain.

Lifestyle Advice

Often the reason that people initially come to our Chiropractic clinic is that they are in pain. Sometimes the pain has been caused by a one off incident but usually the pain is because of a lifestyle that the person has chosen that the body cannot handle properly, or is not resilient enough to withstand.

In this way, lifestyle advice is extremely important for the Chiropractor and the patient to talk about together. If a patient has some kind of lifestyle that has led them towards pain, dysfunction or discomfort then a change must be made into the future if they wish to stay out of at pain.

Our Chiropractors will be able to help with neck pain, low back pain and muscular tension associated with other conditions. You may be reliant on long term Chiropractic care unless lifestyle changes are made and your body has time to rest and recover. Some examples of lifestyle advice maybe changing your diet, having less fizzy drink, doing appropriate exercise regularly or how to get a good night’s sleep. 

Extreme examples of lifestyle advice and changes would be changing your job or leaving a relationship/ situation that is causing you an immense amount of stress. Chiropractors are not Psychologists and therefore cannot help with mental health disorders, but they are trained to recognise when someone is having a stressful time and needs some other professional support that the Chiropractor cannot provide.
